Astro celebrates 20th year in the business

Back in 1996, there was a television revolution in Malaysia – it was the year that Asian Satellite Television and Radio Services was launched.

“The Asian Satellite what?” you say?

Well, you probably know it best by another name – Astro, Malaysia’s first and largest satellite TV network.

Before Astro came about, Malaysians only had three free TV channels to choose from. However, for a fee, Astro would provide not one, not two, but 23 TV channels for subscribers, including dedicated movie, sports, news, kids' channels and more.

Fast forward 20 years, and that initial line-up has grown to more than 180 channels, and Astro has become a staple in almost every household in Malaysia, providing entertainment to millions of Malaysians while continuing to improve through advancements in technology, distribution, and of course, content.

From Akademi Fantasia and Raja Lawak to OlaBola and Oh My English!, Astro has also been actively creating good quality content, while discovering and developing new Malaysian talents at the same time.

However, as the company prepares to enter its third decade, it does so while recognising that the competition for consumers’ time and money is more intense than ever, especially with the rise of digital TV services in the region.

During a press conference at Astro’s headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, its group CEO Datuk Rohana Rozhan said that while digital TV is admittedly a threat, she believes Astro will continue to be the market leader in Malaysia.

“Key to this is our ability to know our customers better than anyone else, identify our strengths, address our gaps and align our resources to meet our challenges ahead. To be a worthy market leader we need to continuously revolutionise, disrupt and grow as an organisation,” she said.

In conjunction with Astro’s 20th anniversary, all customers will have free access to Astro Fiesta (Ch 996/HD Ch 998), a new channel that showcases the best international and local concerts from artistes such as Katy Perry, Queen, 5 Seconds Of Summer and more.

Customers who have connected their boxes can watch on demand entertainment on OD Fiesta for free till end of the year.

All subscribers can also enjoy Astro Awani, Astro Arena, Go Shop 1, Go Shop 2, and eGG channel, as well as selected On Demand content for free through the Astro On The Go (AOTG) app.
