Actor Shaheizy Sam recently posted a statement on his Instagram account to explain his drastic loss of weight.
The statement was accompanied with a selfie of himself looking gaunt and skinnier compared to his buff Polis Evo days.
The 34-year-old actor revealed that he has lost weight for a new role.
“A lot of people have been asking me the same question lately. The questions are, ‘Why are you so skinny?’, ‘Are you sick?’ and some even said ‘Don’t be so skinny because it’s not handsome’. Well, the answer is because of work,” he said in the Instagram posting.
Shaheizy added: “Thankfully, I’m always healthy and it’s not always a must for an actor to look handsome, macho or cute all the time. The character he carries can influence the actor’s lifestyle. I hope that puts all speculation to rest. Thank you for your concern.”
In an interview with Berita Harian, the actor said he shed 8kg for the role of Naufal in Osman Ali’s upcoming romantic drama Pinjamkan Hatiku.
In the movie, Ayda Jebat stars as a woman torn between her old friend (played by Shaheizy) and a doctor (Farid Kamil) who is caring for her when she is sick. The movie is due for release in December. This is not the first time Shaheizy has made headines for his physical transformation.
Semoga segala persoalan terjawab. Terima kasih kerena mengambil berat. I love u all lah!!! ❤️ #PinjamkanHatiku #Naufal
In an interview last year, Shaheizy said he went on the Atkins diet and trained in the gym for five months to achieve his character Inspector Khai’s six-pack abs for the box-office hit Polis Evo.
“Throughout the movie, I was on Atkins diet – zero carbs. If you have no carbs, you have no energy. So, I have been working without carbs, only with protein and fibre,” he said in the interview.
His hard work paid off with Polis Evo becoming the highest-grossing Malaysian movie of all time, with viewers raving about his performance.
Shaheizy's other film this year is Dain Said’s highly-anticipated supernatural drama Interchange, where he plays the role of yet another police, Inspector Man.
