Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen, famous for bubblegum pop hits like Call Me Maybe and I Really Like You, has just made a bold move.
Jepsen surprised everyone last week by releasing a cover version of one of the biggest holiday season hits, Last Christmas, written by George Michael and performed by him and Andrew Ridgeley as the duo, Wham!.
Last Christmas is undoubtedly a very popular track that has stood the test of time – it is 31 years old this year! Although not technically a Christmas song as it tells of a broken-hearted man who’s trying to forget the past year’s Christmas with an ex-lover, Last Christmas is still only usually heard during the year-end holidays.
Unlike many of the earlier covers of Last Christmas, Jepsen keeps things simple in her version. It is still purely a pop song, and there’s quite bit of the 1980s vibe from the original thrown into it.
Best of all, there are no vocal theatrics from Jepsen, unlike Ariana Grande’s pop dance cover of the track in 2013.
There are numerous other covers of Last Christmas in the 30 years since its release, but we seriously feel Jepsen may have won many skeptics over with her awesome rendition. What do you think? Take the poll below!
