It's only a book. For fans of RL Stine’s horror fiction series Goosebumps; nightmare-inducing characters like Slappy the living dummy, a giant blob that eats everything and scarecrows that come alive at night are fortunately, just words on paper.
But what if these monsters were real, waiting to escape the very pages of the books you read? In Rob Letterman’s movie Goosebumps, all hell breaks loose when a teenager accidentally unleashes Stine’s infamous creations into the real world.
The very same teenager (Zach played by Dylan Minnette) with a little help from friends – Hannah (Odeya Rush) and Champ (Ryan Lee) – have to restore peace in the world… or at least in the suburb where they live.
Guess who’s joining them? Stine, played by the affable Jack Black.
In a webchat interview, the cast of Goosebumps talked about what it’s like to work with Slappy, and more.
What is Slappy the dummy like on set?
Minnette: He’s kind of a diva, honestly (laughs).
Lee: Takes a lot of time in hair and makeup.
Black: Yeah he’s silly. You know, he’s pretty rude. He tells you what he thinks, he’s very honest, I’ll give him that. He’s also very high maintenance.
How does your character contribute in the whole saving-the-day process?
Lee: For me, probably nothing besides being a loyal friend. Champ usually just runs. That’s how he stays safe at least.
Rush: Well, Hannah actually tries at one point to get them back into the book. Like she takes an actual book and tries it. There’s a scene where the monster comes out, and everyone is really freaking out so she’s trying to keep them quiet. I’m more calm in certain scenes so sometimes even if you’re not doing anything, just having someone calm can help the situation because then you have time to think of what to do.
Black: It’s true. I think Stine’s contribution is, he’s the one who has the magic books. He’s the one who actually has the delivery system to capture the monsters.
Minnette: And Zach is actually the one who started this all, and I think he realises that, so he’ll do anything to put the things back in the book. Zach is very determined.
Is there a creature that you would like to take home?
Minnette: Maybe Slappy.
Lee: You could have been great friends.
Black: Good luck with that!
