Be swept away on a magical tale of redemption, love and magic in the beloved classical ballet Swan Lake, when it opens at KL's Istana Budaya on July 26.

Fresh off its Scandinavian tour last month, Swan Lake will feature prima ballerina Irina Kolesnikova in the dual role of Odette and Odile in this ballet masterpiece.

This production is presented by St Petersburg Ballet Theatre in collaboration with Shiraz Projects Sdn Bhd. Last year, Ballet West UK presented its production Swan Lake at Genting International Showroom. It looks like Malaysians can't get enough of this ballet classic.

“Irina has performed more than a thousand times in this role and now audiences in Kuala Lumpur will have an opportunity to see her in St Petersburg Ballet Theatre’s debut here,” says Shirazdeen Karim, founder of Shiraz Projects.

First staged in the late 19th century, Swan Lake tells the story of young Prince Siegfried who falls in love with the princess Odette, who is transformed into a swan by an evil sorcerer.

She wanders the world as a swan by day, and it is only at night - by an enchanted lake bathed in moonlight - that she and her companions return to their human form.

Boy meets girl, sparks fly, but there is a dark curse that looms over all. Set to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s immortal score, this is a moving tale of sacrifice and true love.

This upcoming Russian production of Swan Lake features 45 dancers.

Founded in 1994, St Petersburg Ballet Theatre tours extensively and stages over 200 performances around the world each year. It is famous not just for its Vaganova-trained (a ballet technique) dancers, but also for its stunning full-length productions.

Classical pieces from its repertoire include Don Quixote, La Bayadere, Romeo And Juliet, The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty.

The director of the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre (and Kolesnikova's husband) is Konstantin Tachkin.

After its Malaysia run, Swan Lake will tour Taiwan and South Korea.

Swan Lake will be on at Istana Budaya, Jalan Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur from July 26-28 (8.30pm). Tickets range between RM95 and RM455. Call 03-8605 0195 /012-256 0082. Visit: www.myticket.asia.
