At first glance, there doesn't appear to be anything going on in this row of warehouses in Old Klang Road in Kuala Lumpur.
It seems like a quiet industrial area. But venture deep within Gudang Yee Seng 2, and you might hear music - well, experimental sounds - pinging off the walls of the warehouse. Step even closer to discover Kongsi KL, an urban "playground" converted from an old warehouse.
Rehearsals are going well for KongsiKL's upcoming Seni Tiga series, which started in February this year.
The monthly series encourages collaborative performances, with arts practitioners coming from diverse fields.
On June 29, Kongsi KL plays host to Seni Tiga #05: Fabric, a collaborative performance project exploring the relationship between sound and development of the city.
It will feature comic book artist and filmmaker Chong Chin Yew, video installation artist Nadhir Zuhair Nozi and deejay Uzair Sawal.
“Usually when we say 'fabric', it means cloth. But if you check the dictionary, it also means the basic structure of society. It also means walls and ceilings of buildings. So the underlying theme of our show is our concerns about Kuala Lumpur's constant redevelopment, which always seems like it's never ending!” says Uzair, 32, who will soundtrack Seni Tiga #05 from his deejay decks.
Seni Tiga is presented by Kongsi Petak and supported by KakiKongsi and the EXSIM Group.
“Each month, Seni Tiga will feature one performance from a different group of people, coming to do different kinds of performance. We usually get people from three disciplines, namely, 2D, 3D and sounds,” says assistant producer Mah June Yi, 28.
"We hope to make this series as accessible as possible. We also hope it will inspire other artists, and to kickstart other such productions in KL,” she adds.
The other Seni Tiga producers are Loke Soh Kim and assistant producer Low Pey Sien. Seni Tiga #05 will feature field recordings and electronic soundscapes by Uzhair, with Chong's video footage and illustrations projected all around the space, as well as being used for projection mapping by Nadhir.
Preparing for this multi-disciplinary show, says Chong, has been a very interesting experience, especially the process of shortlisting the image to fit the show's mood. He reveals he has been digging deep into his portfolio for images and illustrations.
To Chong's knowledge, niche shows, which such a diverse artistic line-up, are a rarity in Kuala Lumpur. Early last year, Layang, a multi-media theatre show from Main Wayang, played at KongsiKL.
“We also have a lot of footage of foreign workers, coming in, walking around, part of the fabric of the city. It happens that I'm also running an arts space (the Taman Desa Screening Club) and next to me is a building being built. So it was easy to just film it, looking at the workers for hours. It's a whole community in there, living for a couple of months, and then moving elsewhere,” recalls Chong, 38.
Seni Tiga #05: Fabric will take place at KongsiKL, Gudang Yee Sang 2, Taman Goodwood, Jalan Klang Lama in Kuala Lumpur on June 29. Doors open 6pm. Entry is by donation of RM30. FB: KongsiKL.
