There are times when things happen when you least expect it to. Seni Tiga is one such idea that was sparked when Luna Macula, a projection painting artist duo, was tinkering about at the KongsiKL space in Old Klang Road a few months ago.

A professional dance artist who was present at the warehouse venue back then was moved to improvise something on the spot in response to Luna Macula’s experimentation.

This sparked the idea for Seni Tiga, a multidisciplinary collaborative performances series.

“It was a beautiful experience to realise that we are capable of being stimulated to express our reaction to another person’s artwork of another form,” says Mah Jun Yi, Seni Tiga assistant producer.

From February to November, Seni Tiga will be held on every fourth Saturday of the month at KongsiKL. It is an initiative by Kongsi Petak, a member of Kongsi Kolab, which focuses on multidisciplinary arts projects.

“The idea is to create a platform for collaboration and dialogue between artists from different disciplines such as sound artists, performance artists and visual artists. We hope that by putting them together, they can look at performance art from a different perspective and create something bigger together,” she adds.

Each performance will welcome, at least, three artists, and you can expect new faces each month.

Seni Tiga #01: Collaborative Performance, the first installment of this series that will be held on Feb 23, brings together Luna Macula, dancer/choreographer Steve Goh and sound artist/percussionist Jimmy Chong. Four performance works will be presented.

“We work around the idea of ‘Body Riddle’, where each media – music, visual and the human body – take turns to throw questions, to which others will respond with their own expressions. Through the four pieces that the artists create together, the process of asking a question and giving an answer repeats itself and accumulates into an even bigger expression as a whole,” says architect Justin Lee, one half of Luna Macula.

Chef Ooi U-Jean makes up the other part of the duo.

“The collaboration is meaningful in such a way that it does not just bring an opportunity for fresh artists to be guided by established artists, but for experienced performers to see how others experience the world. We welcome other amateur and professional artists who are keen in experimenting and contributing to the local arts scene in the following months,” says Mah.

This Saturday, Seni Tiga #01: Collaborative Performance starts at 8.30pm, but do come early if you want to grab dinner, snacks and drinks at a mini food market that will be open from 6pm. After the performance, the public will be invited to try their hand at a projection painting experience hosted by Luna Macula.

A reminder to dress appropriately as the venue is not air-conditioned.

Seni Tiga #01: Collaborative Performance is on at KongsiKL, Gudang Yee Seng 2, Jalan Klang Lama, Kuala Lumpur on Feb 23. Entry by donation: RM30 (adults) / RM15 (children). The performance is at 8.30pm followed by projection painting at 10.30pm. Facebook: KongsiKL.
