Chinese martial arts novelist Jin Yong visited a tropical rain forest in Sibu, Sarawak on invitation by Hong Kong newspaper Ming Pao chairman Tiong Hiew King in 1997.

After attending the literary seminar organised by Sin Chew Daily in Kuala Lumpur, Louis Cha, whose pen name was Jin Yong, was accompanied by Tiong - who also owned Sin Chew Daily - to fly to Sarawak.

It was arranged for him to visit a tropical rain forest.

A helicopter ferried Jin Yong, Tiong and others from Sibu to Putai, where the wooden camp of Rimbunan Hijau Group, founded by Tiong, was located. They stayed in the camp for three days and two nights.

Many Rimbunan Hijau Group staff were also martial arts novel fans of Jin Yong. Many of them tried catch a glimpse of him, while some brought along his novels, requesting him to autograph the books.

During the trip, Jin Yong experienced the beauty of nature in the thick tropical rain forest and also savoured traditional dishes while in the forest.

He was stung by a bee while in the camp. A Dayak native brought a local lemon for Jin Yong to treat his swollen wound. The swelling gradually subsided after applying the lemon remedy. This little tip of treating wounds amazed Jin Yong.

At the camp, Tiong shared his knowledge about forest with Jin Yong ... such as how to identify the age of a tree, how the natives survived in nature and others.

Jin Yong also enjoyed the sound of insects in the forest.

Millions of Chinese martial arts fans poured tributes to Jin Yong, who passed away in Hong Kong on Oct 30 at the age of 94. – Sin Chew Daily/ANN
