Areca Books has been busy with something a bit out of the norm for this homegrown Penang-based publisher. Since its founding in 2005, it has been publishing nonfiction titles with a focus on cultural heritage, social history, visual arts, environment and architecture. But when publisher Khoo Salma Nasution got wind of a Tamil novel set entirely in Penang, she knew it warranted a closer look.
“Kadalukku Appaal (Beyond The Sea) is considered a pioneering work of modern Tamil fiction,” says Khoo, 53.
