You can stop making those Dick jokes – Dick Grayson is no more. He’s known as Ric Grayson now.
Yes, 78 years after he made his first appearance as the original Robin in Detective Comics #38 in April 1940, Richard John Grayson aka Nightwing, has given up being Dick and will answer to the name Ric instead.
The change came about in last month’s Batman #55, in which Nightwing is shot in the head by KGBeast while on patrol with Batman, and nearly dies.
Though he survives, he loses his memory, and decides to give up being Nightwing and build a new life as a taxi driver in Bludhaven, changing his name from Dick to Ric in the process.
In the recent Nightwing #51 (written by Scott Lobdell), we learn that Ric decides to call himself Ric because he feels too far removed from the person who used to be known as Dick. He is also struggling with a new fear of heights, so he decides to leave behind the Nightwing persona and focus on fighting crime using his detective skills instead.
