A book on Islamic moderation written by a Malaysian author was awarded a prize at a prestigious Iranian literature awards ceremony held on Feb 21.

The Middle Path Of Moderation In Islam: The Qur’anic Principle Of Wasatiyyah by Prof Mohammad Hashim Kamali was one of eight winners at the 24th Islamic Republic of Iran World Award for Book of the Year. The author received his award from Iranian president Hassan Rouhani at a special ceremony at Vahdat Hall, Tehran.

The other prizes went to books by authors and translators from Turkey, Germany, Spain, Finland, Romania, England and Iran.

The Middle Path Of Moderation, published by Oxford University Press in 2015, illuminates the concept of moderation (wasatiyyah) in the Islamic tradition and the importance of its application in contemporary pressing issues, including social justice, women’s rights, environmental balance, economic fairness and globalisation.

Prof Mohammad Hashim is the founding CEO of the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) in Malaysia, and a world-renowned scholar in his field of specialisation.

The World Award for Book of the Year aims to introduce worthwhile international books to Iran. It also honours their authors, editors and translators for elevating general knowledge and culture, and developing public scholarship within the Islamic and Iranian written heritage.

This year’s awards were selected from a primary round of over 2,500 books in different fields of Iranian and Islamic studies. From there, 179 books were assessed, of which 10 books entered a final stage of evaluation before the final winners were chosen.
