It was quite the surprise for the members of homegrown arts collective Five Arts Centre when they were informed, via e-mail, of being awarded Japan’s prestigious Praemium Imperiale Grant for Young Artists.

“We initially thought it was one of those scams, a ‘personal’ e-mail from a ‘Nigerian prince’ wanting to donate some money into our account!” relates theatre practitioner Mark Teh, 35, who has been working with Five Arts Centre since 2001.
