When US President Barack Obama made a guest appearance in Amazing Spider-Man #583 back in 2009, the issue went into five printings and sold five times more than the monthly average, from 70,000 copies to 350,000. It was the highest-selling regular series book of the 2000s.
While other US Presidents (from George Washington to both George Bushes) have graced comics before, Obama’s appeal as the first African-American President made him an instant hit in both the real and fantasy worlds.
