In the Singapore art scene, Lee Kuan Yew – as seen through the eyes of artists – was a challenging figure to interpret and celebrate. Irreverent and provocative works have most often been part and parcel of viewing the great leader in portrait and beyond.

Last February, Singaporean artist Boo Sze Yang held an exhibition which featured 18 portraits of Lee Kuan Yew, painted from images Boo found in books and the Internet. The show was called The Father. The portraits reflected the different facets of the founding father of modern Singapore. Boo placed his subject in unconventional settings in the hope of creating a discourse of the future direction and anxieties in Singapore.
