Malaysian up against six Asian artists for US-sponsored 'Freedom of Art' award

When Nadiah Bamadhaj gets an idea in her head, she tries as much as possible to expand on the idea with academic research – books, academic journals, articles from the internet, and interviews and conversations with friends and colleagues. Sometimes I end up back at the same intellectual place that I started, but with this process I feel I have fulfilled a responsibility to equip myself with other viewpoints on my chosen subject, even if I reject them, she says.

Malaysian artist Nadiah Bamadhaj, 46, is one of seven Southeast Asians nominated for the inaugural Joseph Balestier Award for the Freedom of Art.

The accolade, an initiative between the US Embassy (in Singapore) and Art Stage Singapore 2015 (an Asian art fair that runs from Jan 22–25), nominates artists based on their commitment to the freedom, expression and liberty of art, and the active expression of these ideals through their work.
