Feed the soul : The Artcube Gallery — a modern minimalist space that fully showcases the artpieces.

THE proprietors of Artcube Gallery aim to spread the appreciation of local art further.

Biochemist graduate Azhar Ahmad and electrical engineer Fuad Salleh attended various exhibitions over four years to gain a better understanding of the arts scene.

“Society functions in the same way everywhere, we start with periods of survival, only once we’ve developed, do we find time to enjoy the finer things in life.

“We start questioning who we are as a culture and begin searching for things that feed the soul so this is a space for the exchange of knowledge because I think Malaysia is at that tipping point now,” said Azhar.

The two friends decided to venture into the art gallery business as they see the potential of Malaysian artists in the local and international arena.

Azhar views art as a time capsule, holding glimpses of past cultures for future generations in various formats from mix media art, oil paintings and sculptures.

“Just like monuments, bridges or buildings, art too provides insight into a period and how people lived at the time.”

“Malaysia has world-class artists, so it is the role of galleries to add values to the artwork,” he said.

The minimalist design allows the focus to be on the contemporary artwork from ceramic sculptures to large statement piece paintings from 18 artists.

“We wanted to give the artists a simple yet comfortable place to showcase their work,” said Fuad.

Prominent artist Husin Hourmain whose paintings are inspired by Jawi calligraphy, is featured in the gallery.

“I saw their interest in helping artists so when they decided to open this gallery, it was a pleasure to be part of it.

“An artist wants to tell a story of an event, whether cultural or socio-political, through their work,” said Husin.

Other artists featured include Azad Daniels and Ahmad Shukri.

The space is open to anyone who has a passion for art, and is not simply a venue to purchase works.

Artcube Gallery is hold its official opening today. It is located at Level, Intermark Mall in Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur.
