Hotshot contemporary art maverick Samsudin Wahab's career has accelerated tremendously since the Perak-born artist received the Malaysia Emerging Artist award during its inaugural edition in 2009.

The third edition of the Malaysia Emerging Artist award series promises a competitive edge.

IN the local art scene, the Malaysia Emerging Artist (MEA) award has been pivotal in unearthing new talent and pushing them to the mainstream.

Co-organised by Kuala Lumpur-based galleries HOM Art Trans (previously House of MATAHATI) and Galeri Chandan, the MEA award started back in 2009.

The award recognises talents that haven’t been in the limelight before. The call for MEA applications is on now and the deadline for submissions is Jan 1, 2014.

Anyone below the age of 35 (as of July 2013) can apply. But students are not eligible to enter. Emerging Malaysian artists who fit the initial requirements must submit three works in 2D or 3D in any theme, subject, or size. Artworks must have been produced between 2012 and 2013, and not exhibited locally before.

MEA award, which is a biennial competition, aims to recognise the country’s top emerging talents and to give them the opportunity to break into the local and international art scenes.

“We are very pleased to be working with Galeri Chandan and new collaborator, Map@Publika, and looking forward to having more contributors from various fields to be MEA Award 2013 supporters,” said Bayu Utomo Radjikin, director of HOM Art Trans and a contemporary artist himself.

For 2009, the list of winners comprised Gan Chin Lee, Mohd Al-Khuzairie Ali, Mohd Bakir Baharom, Samsudin Wahab and Shaifuddin Mamat while Chong Ai Lei, Siund Tan, Sun Kang Jye, Ng Swee Keat & Syahbandi Samat were named as the winners in 2011. They received cash/voucher prizes, a 10-day travel grant to a neighbouring country and an all-important solo and showcase exhibition the following year.

For the upcoming MEA award, the prizes are no less lucrative. Five lucky winners will receive a cash prize, vouchers for art supplies, a 10-day travel grant to three cities in Indonesia, a showcase for all five winners and a solo exhibition in 2015, which will give them crucial exposure in the Malaysian contemporary art scene.
