When a love story begins with the death of one of its protagonists, it is unlikely to leave readers with much hope. And yet, Daniel Clowes’ Patience manages to not only tell a story of love with all its accompanying uncertainties, but even underscores its enduring power. And that too, in a graphic novel that revolves around murder and vengeance.
Then again, this is a work by Clowes, who is known for his off-kilter exploration of human relationships – Patience is described on the back cover as “A cosmic timewarp deathtrip to the primordial infinite of everlasting love,” and this is in no way an overstatement.
