Lene Kaaberbøl is a name you may not know and was certainly new to me. She is, however, an extremely successful writer. She published her first book at the age of 15, and her sales total in excess of two million copies worldwide. She is, then, no novice to the writing game. Her best-known work is the co-authored (with Agnete Friis) The Boy In The Suitcase (2011), which won much praise and a number of awards.
Doctor Death is subtitled “A Madeleine Karno” mystery. Madeleine is an interesting protagonist and Kaaberbøl’s reasons for creating her will probably also be many people’s reason for reading about and being drawn to her. Madeleine is a 20 year old woman living in 19th century France. But she has unusual ambitions. Her father is a pathologist, known locally for obvious reasons as Doctor Death, and Madeleine is determined to follow in his footsteps.
