THE roar was thunderous, coming from both engines and the crowd. We were in the Sapporo Dome for the Super Special at Rally Japan, where the world’s top rally drivers had gathered for their speed tests inside the covered arena.
The revving of engine, the spins, near misses at hairpin bends and screeching of tyres all helped build the suspense and drama for the 43,000-strong crowd. Many hearts must have stopped and jaws dropped, watching the death-defying stunts.
