For a small island with limited access to fancy foreign cuisines, I was surprised to find a Japanese ramen place in Labuan by the name of Gohson The Black, introduced by one of my colleagues during my visit there.
Situated in the heart of Labuan town, the restaurant has quite a modern decor and offers a variety of Japanese food in addition to chicken ramen (no pork served here). In fact, they even serve yakiniku (Japanese grilled meat) with Wagyu beef upstairs, albeit at prices that are slightly higher than most Klang Valley counterparts.

Tsukimi Gyodon − beef rice bowl. My colleague who ordered this, reacted positively. The beef slices were thin and well-marinated, and that raw egg yolk certainly added to the smoothness when you stir it all together.

The Torikotsu ramen was legit with thick chicken broth, tender flavourful chicken ‘chasiu’ and braised egg with yolk that was still runny. It also came with plenty of spring onion, fungus and a big sheet of dried seaweed. Other than perhaps being slightly on the saltier side and maybe too much broth, I was quite impressed. The gyoza was quite subpar and a bit too dry for my liking. The taste was alright but it’s not something I would order again.
