Great idea for festive treats

The beefy and umami-packed Spinalis Steak is the highlight of No Eyed Deer’s festive menu, and one that steak connoisseurs should not miss.

CHRISTMAS is a great time for joyful meals with those you hold dear, especially in a cosy little restaurant like No Eyed Deer.

Nestled on Level 1 of the Prima Tanjung business centre in Tanjung Tokong, Penang, its special Festive Menu is sure to delight tastebuds.

This is available for dinner daily until New Year’s Eve, as well as for lunch today.

Highlights include the Spinalis Steak with herbed butter sauce, broccoli, carrots and edamame.

Connoisseurs consider this relatively unknown cut of the Spinalis Dorsi muscle as the pinnacle of beefdom; it combines intense beefiness with tender ‘umaminess’.

Restaurant co-proprietor Ken Low said many would have probably tasted it as part of a regular ribeye steak.

It forms the curved top end, otherwise known as the ribeye cap.

“Butchers and grocers don’t typically sell it on its own as they’ll have to ruin an entire ribeye slab by cutting it away. It’s akin to buying just the engine of a luxury sports car.

“People often go for a tenderloin as it’s softer, but the downside is a subtler flavour. As a result, those who prefer something beefier would gravitate to a ribeye.

“But the Spinalis brings together the best attributes of both, ” said Low, who runs the place alongside business partner Elfina Ng.

Other items on the Festive Menu are Roast Chicken with Cranberry Jelly, Tobiko Black Spaghetti with Prawns, Poached Salmon with Lemon Butter Sauce, British Fish Pie, Koorma Lamb Shank and Chicken Lasagne.

“These are items our customers look forward to every year-end, ” Low said, adding that diners can top up RM10 to make it a set with soup and dessert of the day.

Specially for today, there is Christmas Pudding with Brandy Custard for dessert. The dried fruits in it have been steeped for a month.

From tomorrow onwards, diners will get Banana Chocolate Tartlet instead. All festive items are available for takeaways with advance ordering of a few hours.

Seating capacity at the restaurant is currently limited to 30 due to the movement control order guidelines, so reservations are advised.

Operation hours are noon to 2pm, and 6pm to 9pm daily (closed on Tuesdays).
