Delight in dainty fine dining treats

Indulge in starters like (clockwise from top left) Hokkaido Scallop, ‘Flower’ Crab and Maitake Mushroom, main choices of Olive Pork ‘Pongteh’ and Duo of Quail, as well as the Rainforest dessert.

THRILL the senses with a refined, ingredient-focused ‘culinary fantasy’ at the classy Restaurant Blanc of Macalister Mansion in Penang.

Thoughtfully brought to life with French-Asian flavours by chef de cuisine Benny Yeoh, its dishes captivate both the palate and imagination.

“Fine dining is gaining popularity in Penang with more people looking for something different from, or better than, local street food.

“The fusion approach is less constrained and allows me to create unique dishes not available elsewhere, ” said Yeoh, who is part Peranakan.

With over a decade’s experience working in top hotels and restaurants in Singapore, he has a deep appreciation for high quality, seasonal ingredients.

His four-course Discovery Menu (RM278+) and six-course Degustation Menu (RM368+) both include starters of ‘Flower’ Crab and Maitake Mushroom.

The sweet crustacean meat is a treat with dainty chamomile, osmanthus and zucchini blossom, while the fungi dish also has miso puree, buckwheat and balsamic vinegar.

Notably, Maitake means ‘dancing mushroom’ in Japanese, as people are said to have danced with happiness after finding the prized, large fungi in the wild.

The Degustation Menu has two additional starters — the umami-packed Smoked Hamachi with seaweed cracker, ikura and scallion cream, as well as the luscious Hokkaido Scallop with truffle potato mousseline, Swiss brown mushroom and natural jus.

There are three main dish options, including Olive Pork Pongteh with crispy tendon, yam and broccolini. It is Yeoh’s posh interpretation of a Peranakan classic.

Alternatively, enjoy warm autumn flavours in the Duo of Quail with foie gras, Jerusalem artichoke and spelt, or bite into rich succulence with the Tokushima A5 Japanese Wagyu paired with bone marrow, shitake mushroom and baby spinach.

After a pre-dessert course, Yeoh brings diners close to nature with his Rainforest dessert.

It is an edible mini jungle with a citrus chocolate log, branches, pistachio, flowers, charcoal milk ‘pebble’ and soil.

Petit fours end the night on a blissful note. Wine pairing is also available for RM130+ onwards.

The restaurant’s classy and intimate space is also ideal for private functions and events.

Macalister Mansion itself is a beautifully restored, century-old heritage building. It is the first member of Design Hotels in Malaysia.

Restaurant Blanc’s hours are 7pm to 11pm Tuesday to Sunday. Reservations are advised.
