It may sound strange and a little surreal, but petai ice-cream is now a reality.
“We didn’t actually plan to make this, but through conversations with staff, we were going over the idea of putting something very different into ice-cream and we came up with this idea and ran with it, ” says Lous Looi, the brand’s operations manager.
Looi said there was a fair bit of trial and error involved in perfecting the ice-cream (the brand also makes other quirky local favourites like kaya toast and Musang King) but eventually they got it right.
Since the ice-cream was launched two weeks ago, response has far surpassed anything that Looi and his team were expecting. “Response has been pretty interesting and unexpectedly good. Just yesterday, we had a single customer come in and buy eight tubs of petai ice-cream – which is amazing!”
Looi says although the initial plan was to sell the petai ice-cream throughout the month of June 2020, they may keep it on their permanent menu if response continues to be good.
“When we launched it, we were uncertain if it would be well received or not. I think petai ice-cream is either something you love or hate, so we’ll go by popular response. If most people like it, we’ll keep it on our permanent menu. Otherwise, we’ll phase it out, ” he says.
Frozen’s petai ice-cream is available at the brand’s outlets in Bangsar Telawi, Paradigm Mall Petaling Jaya and SS2 Petaling Jaya, at RM 10.90 per scoop. Alternatively, get a 600ml tub delivered for RM39 at frozenartisans.ecwid.com.
