HEARING the clinks of cups, one can easily mistake the sound for Christmas chimes echoing in the middle of the day during this jolly season.
But the sound actually pointed to diners enjoying a cuppa over afternoon tea.
After all, the festive season does not always have to be about roasts. It can also be an elegant afternoon spent sipping tea and enjoying dainty cakes.
Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur, alongside renowned beverage retailer Whittard of Chelsea, England, is presenting a dazzling afternoon tea experience aptly called Whittard Christmas Afternoon Tea.
Executive pastry chef Antony Hoyle’s creative take is seen in the delicate array of delights that is inspired by the festive season.
Here he features an assortment of sweet and savoury treats alongside must-have freshly baked scones and home-made jams.
The sweet and savoury bites, placed on a three-tier cake stand, were tempting while the Candied Ginger and Cranberry Scones tucked in a pouch-folded linen napkin, was simply classy.
The six types of sweets came in the form of Santa’s Hat, Gingerbread Mandarin Macaron and Neon Green Red Velvet Bauble.
Hoyle said the neon green bauble on top of the red velvet cake was created with pistachio mousse and sea salt caramel.
The taste of pistachio is prominent in the mousse and is ever so silky.
As for the Gingerbread Mandarin Macaron, Hoyle incorporates gingerbread spices with milk chocolate ganache and citrus mandarin confit to create an interesting combination of flavours.
The macaron’s centre filling exudes that distinct citrus mandarin scent that instantly melts in the mouth.
The Santa’s Hat featured a mini cake with white chocolate mousse and raspberry cream with gingerbread cookie.
Upon trying it, I likened it to a soft pudding for its jelly-like texture. In the middle tier, there were Coconut and Mango Choux Puff, Mont Blanc and a miniature Chocolate and Praline Yule Log.
The Coconut and Mango Choux Puff was heavenly on the taste buds as its creamy filling married well with its lovely coconut flake shell. The Mont Blanc was a delightful brown swirl of textures with a base that tasted of raspberries.
“The base is made of cherry with vanilla cream centre and chestnut swirl.
“This traditional French Christmas dessert is made into a peak to resemble the mountain in France, ” Hoyle said of his swirling dessert.
Down to the last piece, the Chocolate and Praline Yule Log was rich with dark chocolate and a distinct bitter flavour.
Mini savoury treats were also included on the bottom tier with Green Asparagus, Bresaola, Fig Jam on Multi Cereal Bread, Slice of Roast Turkey, Chestnut and Aioli Mayonnaise, Truffled Cream Cheese with Cucumber Pickles on Charcoal Bread and Beetroot Cured Salmon, Redcurrant Mayonnaise and trout Caviar on Five-Spice Bread.
The lovely Candied Ginger and Cranberry Scones came with the must-have clotted cream.
Diners can pick any two home-made jams and curds to go with their scones.
Options include pineapple, strawberry, red fruit curd, blueberry, pandan caramel, mango and lime, passion fruit and mandarin ginger. To complement the experience, guests can choose from some of Whittard’s finest teas, ranging from classic black teas to floral and fruit-infused teas.
