THE rose apple or water apple, known locally as jambu air, grabs the spotlight in the yee sang menu at Toh Yuen restaurant in Hilton Petaling Jaya.
The crunchy, sweet and refreshing flavours of the pink-hued fruit is presented in three styles under the restaurant’s yee sang specials.
The Eight Orchards’ Treasures Yee Sang is a meat-free version, featuring finely sliced rose apple, kiwi fruit, dragon fruit, turnip, pomelo and orange segments. It is priced at RM178nett.
Fans of salmon may prefer the Smoked Salmon, Crispy Salmon Skin and Watery Rose Apple Yee Sang (RM198nett), while those who enjoy seafood can opt for the Tiger Prawn, Air-flown Salmon, Pear and Watery Rose Apple Yee Sang (RM268nett).
After sampling the meat-free and seafood versions of the rose apple yee sang during a media preview, I found myself favouring the latter.
The mixing of the fruits along with its sauce created a somewhat soggy result, whereas the lemon wedges gave a refreshing flavour to the seafood ingredients without the sauce overwhelming the dish.
The rose apple yee sang specials are available for dine-in, takeaway and delivery. One platter serves 10 persons.
Toh Yuen is presenting its culinary delights as part of Hilton Malaysia’s “Fortune Flavours The Bold” nationwide campaign this Chinese New Year.
“A play on the ‘fortune favours the bold’ saying, this year’s theme honours the tiger zodiac’s traits of boldness and bravery, while fortune is synonymous with the festive period,” Hilton Malaysia said in a press statement.
As for lunar new year set menus, Toh Yuen is presenting three options for reunion dinners and festive gatherings.
Each menu features nine courses and is crafted for a minimum of five diners.
Prices range from RM168nett to RM218nett per person.
Set menu one offers Salmon Yee Sang, Deep-fried Sea Bass with Thai Sauce topped with Young Mango Slices, Stir-fried Golden Tiger Prawn with Salted Egg Yolk as well as Braised Black Mushroom, Beancurd Skin and Seasonal Vegetables.
Set menu two features Salmon and Jellyfish Yee Sang, Braised Eight Treasure Broth with Crab Meat, Steamed Live Tiger Grouper with Homemade Soy Sauce and Parsley as well as Wok-fried Crispy Tiger Prawn with Kam Heong Sauce.
The more premium set menu three has Top Shell Abalone, Salmon and Jellyfish Yee Sang, Double-boiled Soup with Dried Scallop, Chicken, Herb and Black Mushroom, Steamed Cod Fish with Superior Soy Sauce topped with Crispy Garlic as well as Wok-fried Golden Tiger Prawn with Butter, Salted Egg and Chicken Floss.
Toh Yuen’s Chinese New Year specials are available until Feb 15.
Hilton Petaling Jaya’s all-day dining restaurant Paya Serai is serving a three-day themed buffet spread while Japanese restaurant Genji is highlighting Chinese New Year a la carte specials.
Paya Serai’s Chinese New Year Eve reunion buffet dinner on Jan 31 is priced at RM159nett per adult, high-tea buffet on Feb 1 and 2 at RM139nett per adult and celebratory buffet dinner on Feb 1 and 2 at RM149nett per adult.
Genji’s a la carte specials include Prosperity Uramaki, Spicy Prawn Teppanyaki, Wagyu beef and creamy lobster. The prices start from RM25nett.
There is also a Japanese yee sang of salmon sashimi, baby octopus and fried crab meat, tagged at RM300nett.
