Every drop tells a story

ACCESSING water today requires almost no effort. A twist of a tap, a press of a button and it flows. But this ease has a downside. Because water feels limitless, many households use far more than they need.

Average domestic consumption in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya has climbed to 241 litres per person daily, which is well above the recommended 180 litres by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN).

The difference may seem small in a single household, but multiplied across millions, the impact is significant. Water security, environmental sustainability and long-term resilience now depend not only on infrastructure, but also on the everyday choices we make.

As Malaysia’s largest water services provider, Air Selangor supplies clean and safe treated water to over 9.62 million consumers across the Klang Valley and surrounding regions.

But today, delivering water is only part of the responsibility. Helping people use it wisely has become just as important.

Water conservation made simple

Conservation works best when it feels effortless. Recognising this, Air Selangor has focused on making responsible water use easier, more visible and more intuitive for households.

The Air Selangor 2.0 app puts consumers in control. The app simplifies daily water management including real-time supply updates and online service applications to bill management as well as quick reporting of pipe leaks, bursts, meter issues or illegal connections.

Multi-account and multi-premise management further helps property owners track usage across locations with ease.

Beyond utility features, the app introduces behavioural tools designed to inspire smarter habits.

Joy, Air Selangor’s virtual assistant, offers instant guidance, while Joy Rewards, Malaysia’s first digital rewards programme by a utility company, encourages users to adopt consistent water-saving behaviours.

Gerai Joy allows households to monitor daily water and sugar intake, and the litres per capita (LCD) per day tracker lets users view daily water consumption trends and compare them against recommended benchmarks.

Engaging the younger generation is equally important. Through the “Misi Jimat Air bersama BoBoiBoy 2025” campaign, children in primary and secondary schools learn practical water-saving steps in a fun, interactive way.

Small habits such as shorter showers, early leak repair, reusing rinse water and watering plants during cooler hours, may seem minor, but when multiplied across millions of homes, they reduce demand significantly and ease pressure on the system.

Strengthening reliability for consumers

While household action matters, a resilient water system is the backbone of water security. Air Selangor’s operational achievements demonstrate this commitment.

In 2024, Non-Revenue Water (NRW) was reduced to 27%, saving 298.36 million litres per day that might otherwise have been lost.

The water reserve margin increased to 18.60%, up from 15.34% in 2023, enhancing supply resilience.

The Pipe Burst Index (PBI) improved to 3.25 cases per 100km per year, thanks in part to the replacement of over 1,008km of ageing pipes since 2016.

Water quality remains uncompromised, with 99.94% compliance with the Health Ministry’s Drinking Water Quality Standards in 2024.

These improvements reflect continuous investment in infrastructure and system performance—essential components of reliable supply for every household.

Innovation for a sustainable future

Water security is increasingly intertwined with environmental stewardship. Air Selangor has invested heavily in technology and renewable energy to strengthen sustainability.

In 2024, the company invested RM688.43mil, with 68.7% channelled towards NRW reduction initiatives.

Its solar footprint continues to expand, contributing to a billed-volume carbon intensity of 0.544 kgCO2e/m³.

Solar systems across 17 sites generate 16.5 million kWh annually, yielding average savings of RM137,000 per month.

The Digital Twin system at Semenyih 2 Water Treatment Plant enables real-time monitoring, predictive modelling, and preventive maintenance, improving operational efficiency while reducing energy waste.

These innovations illustrate how environmental stewardship and operational performance work hand in hand to support long-term water security.

Supporting communities

Sustainability also extends to social responsibility. Through the Sesama Mara initiative, Air Selangor supports education, welfare, and community upliftment in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

In 2024, its Box of Hope programme distributed 1,800 provision boxes to B40 families, amounting to RM157,956 in support.

The Empowering Online Learning programme, in partnership with Pandai Education, benefitted 240 students with digital tools for SPM exam preparation worth RM110,000.

Through the Festive Cheer for the Underprivileged programme, Air Selangor provided aid to 2,438 recipients across 19 welfare homes and B40 areas, valued at RM119,598.

Meanwhile, the Skim Air Darul Ehsan (SADE) ensures equitable access to treated water, benefitting 337,851 households as of August 2025.

Together, these programmes demonstrate that water provision is inseparable from broader community well-being.

The future runs on you

For Air Selangor, sustainability begins with the consumer and is reinforced through reliable operations, responsible innovation and meaningful community support.

By helping households adopt wiser water habits, investing in long-term resilience and extending assistance to those in need, the company is working towards a more sustainable and water-secure Malaysia.

And while turning on the tap today may feel routine, it was a luxury not so long ago—one that is preserved, in small but meaningful ways, by how water is used every day.
