The Muppets

The Muppets

Cast: Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Jack Black, Chris Cooper
Running time: 103 minutes

For me, the greatest Muppets movie ever made is still the first one – The Muppet Movie in 1979. That was the first and that was the one where we first heard the song Rainbow Connection, which is revisited in this movie.

Since then, there have been seven movies before this one, notably The Great Muppet Caper (1981) and Muppet Treasure Island (1996).

The premise of this movie is that the Muppets who have long gone their separate ways need to reunite for one last show to save their beloved Muppets Studio. It is Walter, also a Muppet (although he doesn't realise it), who gets the group back together after a tour of the abandoned Muppets Studios with his human brother Gary (Segel) and Gary's girlfriend Mary (Adams).

Gary and Walter grew up together as brothers and never realised one is human and one is Muppet.

While checking out Kermit's office, Walter overhears rich oil magnate Tex Richman (Cooper) talking about demolishing the studios as the land beneath has oil. The only way to save the studios is if the Muppets can raise $10mil.

Gary, Mary and Walter find Kermit and convince him to get the group back together to save the studios. They go on a roadtrip to get everyone – Fozzie Bear, Animal, Gonzo and the rest. Last but not least, of course, is Kermit's old flame Miss Piggy.

Piggy is now a big-time fashion magazine editor in Paris. Before he can get her to return to the United States with him, Kermit must address their unresolved issues. Although it is clear that the duo still have feelings for each other, Piggy says no to joining the group. She claims her life is now in Paris.

What follows is the group trying to get a spot on national TV, then realising they need to rehearse their now rusty acts and even try to find new ones. Will they be able to put a show together? Will Piggy join them? Will they save the Muppets Studios? Will Walter realise he is more Muppet than man?

Easy answer, right? It's a Muppets movie after all.

Will your kids enjoy this? A resounding yes. Will your whole family enjoy this? Yes, even though it starts off a little cheesy with literally a song and dance in the street with the whole neighbourhood joining in and a smile on everyone's face.

Also, for the scenes where Gary and Walter are walking next to each other (and you can't see Walter's legs), ignore the fact that Walter should not be that tall.

I did wish there was less of the Segel and Adams relationship mini-plot and more on just the Muppets. I liked the cameo appearances by Mickey Rooney, Emily Blunt, Whoopi Goldberg, Dave Grohl, Selena Gomez and Neil Patrick Harris. There are more so do watch out for them.

Recommended for the whole family. - Review by S.N.
