Publisher: Scholastic
How does one even review a book about a pet fly? This book may not appeal to parents who would think about how unhygienic it is to have a fly around, but it will be loved by kids.
In fact, the Fly Guy series, for kids four to six years old, was in the New York Times bestseller list.
Author and illustrator Tedd Arnold is a two-time winner of the American Library Association's Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor for Hi! Fly Guy and more recently, I Spy Fly Guy.
These picture books are published in hardcover and come in a pretty compact size that your child can carry it with him wherever he goes. It's easy to pack in the bag for a drive to grandma's.
In case you're not familiar with him, Fly Guy is the name of a pet fly. He belongs to a boy named Buzz!
In this book, Fly Guy joins Buzz and his parents on a holiday. Buzz and Fly Guy are excited to be on holiday and staying in a hotel room, that is until they find out that Fly Guy isn't allowed in the nice restaurant.
Unperturbed by the news, Fly Guy agrees to eat outside. This includes a trashcan, puddle, sticky spot, garbage can – and yet he finds nothing to eat.
He smells something nice and follows the scent into the restaurant kitchen, where he finds a lovely “bathtub” and ends up in someone's soup!
What trouble ensues as the diner finds a fly in her soup!
There's a Fly Guy in My Soup has all the ingredients of a successful children's book – it's icky, gooey, gross and disgusting. And, the kids will just love it.
Plus it's a lot of fun with a happy ending.
The characters' bug eyes and the cute illustrations which seem to jump out of the page will appeal to the kids as well.
The story is short and it's easy for the little ones to read. The plot is a simple one – just nice for young readers. They should be giggling all the way to the end of the book.
Plus, if your child likes this book, there are several other books from the series to get.
