Reinventing the reality show

With CBS' The Will, there wasn't a way. Richard Branson crashed as The Rebel Billionaire on Fox. Mark Cuban had few takers as The Benefactor on ABC. The WB's Big Man on Campus, set at the University of Central Florida, was a weakling, big in name only.

Reality television this season has produced more stinkers than Ben Affleck's film career and Ashlee Simpson's music. Broadcast executives, however, remain staunchly committed to the form, even as they spice it up and accentuate the positive.
