Malaysian singer-songwriter Zee Avi, now based in the United States, has become a star in her own absence here.

ANYONE who wonders why on earth there has been a steady stream of Zee Avi copycats acting out her playful bilingual tune Kantoi, a mesh of Malay and English, on YouTube clearly hasn’t been paying attention. From a local music website starting a “Manglish” movement right to school video projects and a hilarious version done by Marina Mahathir’s young daughters, this feel-good tune has truly taken a life of its own.
