- HUGH Dancy plays the seriously level-headed Luke Brandon, Rebecca “Becky” Bloomwood’s editor and object of her growing affections.
In the movie, Dancy – an Oxford graduate – plays an Englishman in New York, as he has to be what Luke is in Sophie Kinsella’s Shopaholic books – a Brit.
“On the surface, Luke appears to be the exact opposite of Becky but like all matches, these initial differences end up being the very thing that draws the two characters together,” he said.
Dancy, who has starred in Black Hawk Down, Elizabeth I (where he was nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of the Earl of Essex) and King Arthur, admitted to being a huge fan of the Shopaholic books, describing them as “classic British writing”.
To him, the hilarious books have the voice of denial that people have one time or another. “We know the lies we tell ourselves,” he said.
The 33-year-old Briton felt really comfortable playing Luke. “I got to play in my own accent.”
