The X factor

THERE’S a scene in Total Recall where Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character is asked what he wants to experience in his mind as he undergoes a fantasy memory implant. He chooses to be a spy for a rebel uprising on Mars and the movie goes on to depict how reality and fantasy mesh into one. We don’t have that kind of technology yet, but we do have something pretty close – cinema.

I am Iron Man. Or at least I wanted to be Iron Man after watching the film recently. So that’s what I went around thinking the next couple of days. Thing is, when the lights came on and the reel stopped spinning, the escapism I felt in the cinema slowly wore off. So to become Iron Man, I had to catch the film again on the big screen. And again.
