TWO of Malaysia’s independent filmmakers – Deepak Kumaran Menon and Tan Chui Mui – have grabbed awards at separate film festivals. Deepak’s directorial debut, the Tamil-language Chemman Chaalai (The Gravel Road), impressed the jury of the Nantes Festival of Three Continents in France, which ended on Nov 29. He also received the Special Jury Award.
