Insights on Industry 4.0 adoption for SMEs

HOW can small and medium enterprises (SMEs) embrace Industry 4.0 solutions to enhance productivity?

GPRO Global Sdn Bhd founder and executive director Jordan Tang will share his knowledge on the matter at the Export Excellence Awards 2019 roadshow in Johor Baru on June 18 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel.

Tang has 28 years of entrepreneurial experience in managing IT-based companies. He has served as mentor to young entrepreneurs and nurtured aspiring technopreneurs.

His company, which specialises in radio frequency identification, Internet of Things (IoT) and automation for the apparel, logistics and healthcare industries, has assisted SMEs in adapting to Industry 4.0. It has over 300 clients, both local and foreign.

“We live in a digital world. IoT is going to help digitalise business processes and it is important for SMEs to transit to Industry 4.0, which will be effective to improve productivity,” he says.

Tang will be one of four panellists at a forum on Critical Aspects of Exporting with Growth Opportunities in Asean. The other panellists are Port of Tanjung Pelepas head of commercial Prakash Thurairasasingam, Linaco Manufacturing (M) Sdn Bhd managing director Joe Ling and Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Bhd transaction banking head of trade Segar Govindasamy.

Tang will focus on integration of information and communication technology (ICT) in operations for SMEs to stay relevant and competitive in business, with elaboration on e-commerce for SMEs.

“Alibaba and Amazon will not be around today if not for IT. Malaysian companies should not only sell at retail outlets, but also online to reach out to the world market,” he says.

On Asean, Tang says its 600 million population makes the region a huge market for consumer goods.

“If the free trade agreement is implemented fully, Malaysians can look at Asean as a single market,” he says.

He also advises SMEs to take part in exhibitions and trade shows to promote their brands.

“We work closely with Matrade (for exhibitions) and participate in other trade shows abroad, in countries relevant to us such as Vietnam, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Tunisia and Germany,” he adds.

The Export Excellence Awards 2019 roadshow provides a platform for entrepreneurs and businesses to share best practices and challenges faced by Malaysian companies in the export industry.

The seven main award categories are electrical and electronics; oil and gas; chemical, mineral and alloy; agriculture; machinery, equipment and automation; services; and other industries. Three companies will receive the Exporter of the Year title, while a special award will be given in the halal products category.
