KUALA LUMPUR: A special meeting will be held tomorrow with the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), the Energy Commission (EC), Tenaga Nasional Bhd
(TNB) and the Ministry of Finance (MoF).
The meeting will review immediate mitigation measures to reduce the impact of the electricity bill increase on affected households.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that upon his return from India and the Maldives, his attention remained focused on the people's concerns regarding the recent increase in electricity bills.
"I have heard the complaints raised, and this matter needs to be given attention and addressed immediately.
"I would like to emphasise that the effort to target subsidies will continue to be maintained to protect the majority of the people," he said in a statement here today.
Anwar, who is also the Minister of Finance, said that around 80 per cent of domestic users who consume electricity not exceeding 600 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month remain protected and are not affected by the rate increase following the rise in fuel costs this year.
"However, the haze conditions and hotter weather recently have driven an increase in electricity consumption among some households, causing their monthly usage to exceed the 600 kWh threshold and thus subjecting them to the Automatic Fuel Cost Adjustment (AFA)," he said.
Therefore, the MADANI government will continue to ensure that every step in targeting subsidies is implemented fairly and reasonably, with the interests and well-being of the people always being a priority, he added. - Bernama Anwar Ibrahim, electricity bill, TNB, MOF, EC, hot weather, haze, special meeting
