MIDA sees broader investment pipeline beyond data centres in 2026

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) is expected to see a variety of potential investments into various sectors this year, rather than solely focusing on data centres.

Its chief executive officer, Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, noted that while data centre projects typically involve substantial investment values, discussions are also underway with other sectors.

"Some of the discussions are still ongoing, and it may happen this year as far as approval is concerned, or it may happen next year,” he told the media during today’s ‘Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA)-Media Appreciation High Tea and Networking Session’.

MIDA chairman Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz was also present at the session, as well as Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) CEO Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj.

Meanwhile, Tengku Zafrul said the investment authority will focus on creating a spillover effect from the execution of realised investments, particularly in terms of job creation and income growth.

"There is no point in executing something if the outcome is not the intended outcome. Similarly, for realised investment, are we creating the right spillover? Are we creating the right kind of jobs for our people that improve income levels?

"Are we creating jobs where people are no longer underemployed? There is no point creating jobs where they do not increase the productivity of the country,” he added. - Bernama
