MIDF, IACSA inks MOU to advance IP valuation and financing in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: MIDF Bhd and the Intangible Assets Commercialisation and Strategy Association (IACSA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to strengthen Malaysia’s intellectual property (IP)-driven innovation ecosystem.

MIDF Bhd is a unit of MBSB Bhd.

MBSB said the MOU signed during the IACSA roundtable on IP valuation and finance aims to establish a structured and trusted approach to IP valuation and financing, supporting the country's transition towards an innovation-led and intangible asset-based economy.

"The collaboration formalises a clear division of roles, with IACSA acting as a neutral multi-stakeholder engagement partner that brings together industry, academia, valuation professionals, policymakers, investors and international networks, while MIDF supports and advances IP-based financing initiatives as part of its developmental mandate.

"Together, both parties will focus on developing credible frameworks for IP valuation and financing, strengthening trust infrastructure and risk management mechanisms for IP-backed lending, and promoting new financing models that enable intangible assets to be recognised as bankable economic value," it said in a statement.

MIDF chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Mamat said the partnership reflects MIDF’s commitment to moving beyond traditional financing models by building a credible ecosystem where intellectual property can be responsibly valued and financed. "By working with IACSA as a neutral platform, we are helping to position Malaysia as a regional hub for IP commercialisation, while ensuring that innovation is supported with discipline, strong governance and credible valuation frameworks,” he said.

The partnership is expected to enhance Malaysia’s competitiveness in the global IP landscape by enabling innovation-led growth across key industries and fostering stronger regional and ASEAN-level collaboration in IP valuation and financing practices.

Following the signing of the MOU, both parties will establish dedicated working groups to operationalise the agreed strategies, develop actionable policies and financing models, and strengthen regional partnerships to support ASEAN IP harmonisation, with the long-term aim of building a sustainable IP economy in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, IACSA said the roundtable is focusing on IP valuation, financing and regional strategic collaboration, bringing together international experts, industry leaders and financial institutions to help shape Malaysia’s IP-driven innovation ecosystem. "The event provided a platform for in-depth discussions on turning IP into bankable assets, strengthening national capabilities, and exploring ASEAN-wide opportunities for innovation-led growth," it added.

The IACSA said discussions were structured around five core themes, including IP finance in practice, risk management and trust infrastructure, new financing models driven by intangible assets, building Malaysia’s IP economy, and strengthening ASEAN-level collaboration in IP valuation and financing. - Bernama
