FBM KLCI ends lower as selling pressure weighs on market

KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI closed at its intraday high today, but selling pressure prevailed, contrasting with the sentiment in regional markets.

The benchmark index ended 1.82 points, or 0.11% lower at 1,611.43, its intraday high. It hit an intraday low of 1,602.94.

All indices on Bursa Malaysia ended lower, except for the Bursa Malaysia Plantation Index.

Market breadth was negative, with 433 gainers trailing 662 losers, while 478 counters remained unchanged. Trading volume amounted to 3.02 billion shares, valued at RM2.4bil.

Among the decliners, Ayer fell 40 sen to RM7, PETRONAS Dagangan lost 40 sen to RM20, Kuala Lumpur Kepong declined 36 sen to RM21.44 and Hong Leong Financial Group gave up 22 sen to RM18.22.

Nestle rose 40 sen to RM96.20, United Plantations added 30 sen to RM31.80, Tenaga Nasional gained 30 sen to RM13.82 and LPI Capital climbed 14 sen to RM12.84.

Zen Tech International, the most active counter on Bursa Malaysia, tumbled 50%, or 0.5 sen to 0.5 sen with 143.99 million shares traded.

Meanwhile, the ringgit was down 0.1% against the greenback to 4.4240.

Elsewhere in the region, Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.18%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index closed up 2.76%, South Korea’s Kospi tumbled 2.78% and China’s composite index lost 0.17%.
