May yearly wholesale, retail trade expands

Sales value of wholesale and retail trade rebounded 1.5% month-on-month, driven by the motor vehicle and wholesale trade sub-sectors.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s wholesale and retail trade recorded a monthly sales value of RM138bil, growing 6.6% year-on-year (y-o-y) in May 2023, says the Statistics Department.

Chief statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the increase was attributed to the motor vehicles sub-sector, which surged 22% or RM3.1bil to RM17bil.

“Retail trade also expanded by 5% or RM2.8bil to RM58.8bil, followed by wholesale trade with an increase of 4.4% or RM2.6bil to RM62.2bil,” he said in a statement.

For a month-on-month comparison, the sales value of wholesale and retail trade rebounded 1.5%, contributed by the motor vehicles and wholesale trade sub-sectors at 16.2% and 2.1%, respectively.

Mohd Uzir said for the performance across sub-sectors, the double-digit growth of 22% in the motor vehicles sub-sector was pushed up by the sales of motor vehicles, which jumped 29.8% or RM2.1bil to RM8.9bil.

However, sales, maintenance and repair of motorcycles decreased by 5%. — Bernama
