Construction sector records 8.8% rebound

KUALA LUMPUR: The overall construction sector posted an 8.8% rebound in 2022 after a two-year declining trend, according to the Statistics Department.

In a report yesterday, chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said all sub-sectors picked up during the year with double-digit growth recorded in special trade activities (19.6%); and non-residential buildings (18.7%).

“The civil engineering and residential building sub-sectors turned around to positive growth of 2.7% and 3.4%, respectively,” he said.

The total value of work done in 2022’s construction amounted to RM121.9bil – lower than the pre-pandemic period in 2019 which totalled RM146.4bil, he said.

Meanwhile, the volume index of the wholesale and retail trade Malaysia registered a 9.9% growth year-on-year (y-o-y) in the fourth quarter of 2022 (4Q22), bringing the overall performance for 2022 to 14.3%.

Mohd Uzir attributed the increase to the retail trade sub-sector, which rose 19.3%, followed by motor vehicles and wholesale trade, which increased 7% and 0.9%, respectively.

“For quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index increased 1.6%, supported by motor vehicles which grew 5.1%,” he said.

Separately, Mohd Uzir said the volume index of services rose 11.7% y-o-y to 142.6 points in 4Q22 versus 127.7 points in the same quarter last year. The base year is 2015.

He said the rise was stimulated by wholesale and retail trade, food and beverage and accommodation segments at 12.2%, followed by business services and finance segment (11.6%), information and communication and transportation and storage segment (10.6%) and other services segment (13.3%). —Bernama
