EPF recognition for external fund managers

“The fund managers have been instrumental in enhancing the performance of EPF’s assets and as our funds grow, we will continue with this diversification strategy and leverage on their insights and skillsets that complement EPF’s own internal fund management capabilities,” EPF chairman Tan Sri Ahmad Badri Mohd Zahir

KUALA LUMPUR: The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) has announced awards presented to its top external fund managers in recognition of their performance in managing its portfolios in 2021.

“The EPF’s line of external fund managers fared well in 2021 and delivered commendable results that were within the EPF’s objectives and expectations for the year.

“The fund managers have been instrumental in enhancing the performance of EPF’s assets and as our funds grow, we will continue with this diversification strategy and leverage on their insights and skillsets that complement EPF’s own internal fund management capabilities,” EPF chairman Tan Sri Ahmad Badri Mohd Zahir said in a statement yesterday.

The EPF’s External Fund Managers Awards, which is now in its 20th year, celebrates and recognises the achievement of the EPF’s line of external fund managers on their respective mandates that are assessed based on a set of quantitative metrics.

The top-three fund managers ranked in the equity mandate category were Nomura Asset Management Malaysia Sdn Bhd for “Best Three-Year ROI International Equity Fund Manager for MSCI Ethical Asia (ex-Japan ex-Malaysia) 2021”, Nomura Islamic Asset Management Sdn Bhd for “Best Three-Year ROI International Equity Fund Manager for MSCI Syariah Asia (ex-Japan ex-Malaysia) 2021” and BNP Paribas Asset Management Malaysia Sdn Bhd for “Best Three-Year ROI International Equity Fund Manager for FTSE Ethical World Developed 2021”.

As at Dec 31, 2021, the retirement fund had outsourced a total of RM167.63bil to external fund managers, representing an increase of 8% year-on-year over the RM155.18bil outsourced at end-2020.

This allocation, invested across both equity and fixed-income instruments, represented 16.66% of the EPF’s total investment assets, the EPF added.

For the financial year ended 2021, the EPF delivered a dividend rate of 6.1% with a payout of RM50.45bil to contributors under Simpanan Konvensional, and a return of 5.65% with a payout of RM6.27bil for contributors under Simpanan Syariah.

Cumulatively, the total payout for 2021 was RM56.72bil.

In March 2022, 16 EPF external fund managers signed the Sustainable Investment Pledge to solidify their commitment to include environmental, social and governance or ESG considerations into their investment decision-making process.
