KUALA LUMPUR: Ericsson, chosen by Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) to deploy the nationwide fifth generation (5G) network, sees the critical network infrastructure as crucial to speed up the country’s transformation towards an advanced digital economy.
President of Ericsson Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, David Hägerbro said it was an honour for Ericsson to be partnering with DNB for the 5G network rollout.
“This critical network infrastructure will accelerate the country’s transformation towards an advanced digital economy, as per the government’s MyDigital blueprint, quickly bridging the digital divide, ” he said.
On Thursday, DNB has inked an RM11bil deal with Ericsson (M) Sdn Bhd to accelerate the deploy the 5G network and ecosystem that is projected to create 100, 000 jobs.
The 5G network will be launched by end 2021 in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Cyberjaya and in other parts of the country at later dates, according to DNB.
Hägerbro added 5G will offer users faster connectivity speeds, ultra-low latency, and greater bandwidth and enable Malaysian entrepreneurs to create applications that will benefit consumers and help drive businesses in the country.
The scope of work will see Ericsson undertake the design and development of the nationwide end-to-end 5G network comprising core, radio access and transport network (RAN), operation and business support systems (OSS/BSS) and managed services.
“Having been part of the evolution of Malaysia’s information and communication technology industry since 1965, we are delighted that our leading 5G solutions and global experience in deploying 86 live 5G networks to date will be leveraged for the benefit of all Malaysians, ” he said.
Hägerbro said Ericsson’s contribution towards nation building, technological innovation, and creation of local jobs in Malaysia is important to the company, as evidenced by its long-standing partnerships across local academia, industry and with communities.
