KUALA LUMPUR: Toyota Vios, Yaris and Hilux helped drive UMW Holdings’ sales of 59,320 vehicles for 2020 – exceeding its target of 53,000 units -- boosted by the sales tax exemption.
UMW said in a statement on Thursday UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) registered its highest monthly sales for the year with 9,246 units sold in December 2020.
It attributed the strong vehicle sales due to UMWT and its 38% associate, Perodua as the sales tax exemption drove sales in the second half of the year.
Toyota Vios, Yaris and Hilux were UMWT’s best-selling models for the year. Further, UMWT officially launched the newly-enhanced Toyota Vios as well as Yaris on Dec 17 and on the same day premiered the Toyota GR Yaris and Vios GR-S, as part of the Gazoo Racing line-up.
“These new models coupled with the planned new and exciting model launches are expected to drive sales in 2021, ” it said.
Perodua sold 25,171 units in December 2020, its second highest monthly sales for the year. This resulted in Perodua achieving total sales of 220,154 units for 2020, beating its target of 210,000 units for the year by 10,154 units or 4.8%.
Perodua Myvi, Axia and Bezza continued to be its best-selling models in 2020. Moving forward, Perodua will continue to fulfil the outstanding orders and push for higher sales this year.
UMW Holdings president and group CEO, Datuk Ahmad Fuaad Kenali expressed his appreciation to the customers amid the challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
"The demand recovery in the second half of last year was driven by the sales tax exemption given by the government under the Penjana (Pelan Jana Semula Ekonomi Negara) initiatives which augurs well for the Malaysian automotive ecosystem.
“We would like to express our appreciation to the government for the sales tax exemption as well as the extension to June 30, 2021 which will hasten the recovery of the automotive sector.”
