PETALING JAYA: The Malaysia Shipowners’ Association (MASA) has thanked the government for revoking the exemption for foreign-flagged, cable-laying ships.
“MASA would like to extend our gratitude and sincere thank you to Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong for the revocation of exemption under Section 65u, as published in the Federal Government Gazette on Nov 13 2020.
“The minister’s wise decision in the spirit of patriotism and ‘Malaysian First’ agenda on our request is greatly appreciated for the development of the local shipping industry, especially in the submarine cable-laying and maintenance sector, ” said MASA chairman Datuk Abdul Hak Md Amin (pic below) said in a statement yesterday.
He added that the revocation will allow local companies to partake in this “niche market segment.”
“The revocation will pave opportunities to local companies to invest in this very niche market segment so that it will be able to grow and support the marine industry by creating new jobs, technology transfer, garnering foreign direct investment on marine and subsea technology to support the telecommunications industry, ” he added.
