Household e-commerce spending on uptrend


In terms of transportation, the HES revealed that motor vehicle fuel accounts for the highest expenditure at 91.8%, followed by car and motorcycle service (73.5%), parking fees (29.5%) and car wash and polish (25.7%)

PUTRAJAYA: Household spending via e-commerce platforms comprised 23.3% of total household expenditure in Malaysia last year, compared with 11.3% in 2016, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM).

The DoSM’s Household Expenditure Survey (HES) 2019 revealed that out of the total number of households using e-commerce platform, Selangor recorded the highest percentage at 27.8% followed by Johor (12.3%) and Penang (9.2%).

In terms of household e-commerce expenditures, clothing and footwear ranked the highest at 9.3%, followed by miscellaneous products and services (6.9%), furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance (5.1%) and communications (4.5%).

The survey also revealed that the most popular online purchase under the food and non-alcoholic beverage category is rice (96.9%), followed by fresh chicken (88.8%), bread (87.1%) and eggs (85.4%).
