Holistic solution needed for unemployment


Talents mismatch: Fresh graduates currently find themselves in a situation where they are underqualified and inexperienced for many high-skilled jobs, but are overqualified for the remaining jobs.

Recently, we have read more news about retrenchments through voluntary separation schemes and mutual separation schemes. Latest reports included Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd, the Utusan Group, and Media Prima Bhd.

As of Sept 30,24,000 employees had been laid off, according to the Human Resources Ministry. Those affected are in the manufacturing sector, which saw 33% of employees losing their jobs (7,944 people), followed by administrative and support services of 30% (7,309 people) and the financial sector of 7.1% (1,748 people).
