KUALA LUMPUR: edotco Group Sdn Bhd plans to build 400 to 500 telecommunications towers in its first year of operations in the Philippines via its new joint venture.

According to a statement, edotco has entered into an equity partnership with ISOC Infrastructure Inc in the Philippines named ISOC edotco Towers Inc, which upon completion will become a subsidiary of edotco.

Each company will invest up to US$100mil in the Philippines over the next three to five years, it added.

The towers in the Philippines will contribute towards a target of 1,000 towers planned for the first phase of operations, spanning two to three years.

edotco group CEO Suresh Sidhu said the common tower sharing practice is still in its early stages in the Philippines, but will support the country's digital ambitions and assist in bringing connectivity to 108 million Filipinos.

He added that shared infrastructure has helped mobile network partners by alleviating the cost pressure of building and maintaining towers.

"The right sharable infrastructure will be able to meet the current demands for affordable and reliable connectivity in the Philippines.

"Partnering with local leading players is a key strategy for us to ensure we are meeting the country’s specific needs and we see this collaboration with ISOC as a catalyst to enable transformation within the Philippines telecommunications sector and lay the right foundation for the country’s digital readiness," he said.

The Philippines marks edotco's entry into an eighth market in South and Southeast Asia. The group's markets in the region comprise Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
