PETALING JAYA: Hernan Corporation Sdn Bhd will add mango and rambutan to its range of halal food products when its new RM35mil factory begin operations in September.
The company presently produces 30 halal food products made from durian and other tropical fruits, and has been exporting them to 18 countries.
“We are planning to introduce new dessert products made from fruits such as mango and rambutan, ” said Hernan founder and chief executive officer Anna Teo Lee Chu.
The Islamic Development Department (Jakim) has issued halal certification to the company since it started food production seven years ago, she said, adding that Hernan would be vying for recognition in the halal products category at the inaugural Export Excellence Awards 2019 later this year.
Taking part in the Export Excellence Awards is also to educate her employees in halal product innovation and proft-sharing as well as to inspire them to venture into exports, she said.
Hernan, which operates in the Ara Damansara industrial area, was the gold award winner for Best Global Market at the Star Outstanding Business Awards (SOBA) in 2016 and 2017. The company will move its operations to its new production plant in Puncak Alam in September.
Having started out in food trading in 1996, Hernan expanded to producing durian-based products such as mooncake, ice cream and pancakes.
“Our musang king durian mooncake is a top seller in China, and also countries with a huge Chinese population such as the US, Canada and Australia, ” she said, adding that there are plans to introduce its ice cream in India later this year.
The company achieved a turnover of RM42mil last year, Teo said, and is targeting RM160mil in revenue in three years’ time.
As the global halal industry offers huge prospects for Malaysian exports, she believes that now is the time to gain recognition for homegrown halal products.
A special award will be given in the halal products category at the inaugural Export Excellence Awards 2019, launched by Star Media Group in partnership with Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Bhd, with PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd as co-sponsor and Matrade as patron.
The seven main award categories are electrical and electronics; oil and gas; chemical, mineral and alloy; agriculture; machinery, equipment and automation; services; and other industries. Three companies will receive the Exporter of the Year title.
