KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian public-listed companies were feted for their efforts in building stakeholder trust at PwC Malaysia's Building Trust Awards 2019.

At this year's event, Malayan Banking Bhd was named the winner of the awards, while Sime Darby Bhd and IHH Healthcare Bhd came in second and third place respectively.

There were also three special mentions in recognition of efforts in specific areas of the methodolody.

Maybank received a mention for PwC’s integrated reporting framework benchmarking analysis, while Sime Darby got the nod for trust public poll and trust analytics and IOI Corp Bhd excelled in Iclif's leadership trust survey.

"An integral part of PwC’s Building Trust programme, the Building Trust Awards takes into account how companies communicate value creation, as well as how they are perceived to build trust through the lens of their stakeholders (including their customers, employees and the public)," said PwC in a statement.

This year's awards is the third in Malaysia since its inception in 2015 and the first time stakeholder trust was taken into account beyond a financial assessment of the participating companies.

Emphasising the importance of trust-building, PwC managing partner Sridharan (Sri) Nair noted that fraud and corporate misdeeds are rising to alarming proportions around the world.

"We can’t allow these issues to be normalised nor can we allow ourselves as businesses to be disempowered.

"Building trust not only deserves a spot on the boardroom agenda. It needs to be at the forefront of executive meetings, investment and business decisions, and communicated to all levels of the organisation as part of your culture," he said.
